PATROL DOGS

Patrol dogs, or "Dual Purpose" dogs, are full-service police canine partners. These dogs do it all... The dogs are trained to protect their handlers, apprehend suspects, search buildings, search open areas, deploy from a patrol vehicle, and guard suspects. In addition, advanced trained dogs can become part of a SWAT or other Special Response Team and work side by side with tactical entry teams. Most patrol dogs are also cross-trained in the disciplines of detection (normally narcotics or explosives detection), human tracking and evidence/article recovery. Typically, agencies choose either the Belgian Malinois or the German Shepherd.
