2010 Guest Trainer Information:
The Kansas Police Dog Association is excited to announce the 2010 guest trainer as Achim Cullman. Achim comes to us from Germany, by way of Indiana. He started working with police dogs in 1990 in Germany and has been a trainer since 1992.
After graduating from trainer class, Achim took over the training for the German State Police K-9 division training 32 dogs at the time. Achim trained officers in basic patrol work consisting of obedience, tracking, article search and scenario based patrol work with aggression elements. Achim also trained the narcotic detection classes and judged in both fields during annual certification. Achim comments, "My basic training philosophy is rather simple: I believe in positive re-enforcement and working with a dogs natural skills by channeling them to my use, rather then force and pressure based training, which has a tendency to fail in the field, when it is needed most."
Achim has been involved in studies of animal behavior as a member of the Field Research Group for the Fraunhofer Institute for Animal Behavior and he has been involved in a German research center with the assignment to conduct field studies in pack behavior. Achim came to the United States in 1998 and currently works for the Allen County, Indiana Police Department.
Achim has been a consultant for the Tulsa, Oklahoma police K9 unit, as well as other agencies in the U.S., with regards to K9 training and problem solving.
We look forward to working with Achim and learning from him!
