In Memory Of...
This page was created and dedicated to all police service canines who have died in the line of duty or while active in law enforcement. The canines are missed like a family member and they should be remembered for their courageous efforts and tireless work.
February 11, 2009: "Benno" passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. "Beeno" spent the couple of years with Jess Quidachay, of the Kansas Department of Corrections. "Benno" was originally trained and assigned to KPDA Trainer Rick Elliott and after Rick's passing, "Benno" retired with Quidachay. He served a number of years with the Kansas Department of Corrections before his retirement. "Benno" apparenty had kidney failure, which ultimately lead to his death.

May 4, 2007: "Flicak" passed away on Wednesday, January, 30, 2008. "Flicka" spent the last five months with handler Allen Kinsley, of the Linn County Sheriff's Office. "Flicka" served with the Linn County Sheriff's Office since 2004. "Flicka" apparenty succombed to complications from emergency surgery which she had on January 4th.

May 4, 2007: "Falco" passed away on Friday, May 4, 2007 in the presence of his handler, Greg Turney. "Falco" spent 7 years on the street with Greg Turney of the Leawood, Kansas Police Department. "Falco" was brought into the K-9 Unit in December 1999 and was partnered with Officer Turney. He performed 50 public demonstrations, made 465 narcotic searches, 89 tracks, 27 building searches, located 16 felony suspects, and located more than 100 pounds of hidden narcotics in two separates searches alone.

December 28, 2006: "Isaac" passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at the age of 10. "Isaac" spent 6 years on the street with Sgt. Daimon Cundiff of the Andover Kansas Police Department.
"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."

July 26, 2006: "Duco" passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at the age of 10. "Duco" was 10 years old and spent his working career at the El Dorado Correctional Facilty. Duco was initally trained by Dan Powell and was assigned with Chuck Morris as his latest partner.

June 12, 2006: "Tailey" passed away on Monday, June 12, 2006 at the age of 7. "Tailey" spent 4 years on the streets with the Hill City Police Department, the Reno County Sheriff's Office, and most recently with Handler Dustin Cooke of the South Hutchinson Police Department.

June 1, 2006: "Rosie" passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at the age of 10. "Rosie" spent 6 years on the street with Sgt. Chad McCluskey of the Augusta Kansas Department of Safety. "Rosie" developed cancer of the liver that was not treatable.

November 11, 2005: "Kikkert" passed away on Friday, November 11, 2005 at the age of 14. "Kikkert" spent 9 years on the street with Officer Todd Bledsoe of the Leavenworth Kansas Police Department. "Kikkert" had developed arthritis and was discovered to have a tumor on his spleen that was very aggressive in growth. It was causing internal bleeding and a low red blood cell count. He really slowed down in the last three weeks, but had the job in him up to the last moment.

November 29, 2004: "Kyra" a black Belgian Malinois who was assigned to handler Tom Canfield, of the Hutchinson Correctionaln Facility, passed on November 9, 2004. Kyra had some tumors removed a few days prior and another quickly developed while at a training seminar in Lawrence, Kansas. Kyra was transported back to Hutchinson where she was taken to a veteranarian. A few weeks later, "Kyra" passed.
August 27, 2004: "Shotgun," a Belgian Malinois, passed away of an apparent heart attack. "Shotgun" had been with handler Chris Jones and the City of Beloit and was trained in narcotics detection, tracking / trailing, and patrol work.
August 21, 2004: "Ranger," a Black Lab, passed away after being sick for several weeks. The vets were unable to determine what was wrong with him. "Ranger" had been with handler Keith Coleman and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and was trained in narcotics detection.
August 2004: "Fanta," a German Shepherd who was assigned to handler Mike Smith, of the Barton County Sheriff's Office passed away in August of 2004.
March 10, 2004: "Herta," a female Belgian Malinois, passed away in May of 2004 after suffering from health problems. "Herta" worked with Lt. Rich Unrein, of the Barton County Sheriff's Department.
August 2003: "Duke," a male Belgian Malinois, was put down after his fight with age and arthritis. He served with SSgt. Dan Powell at the El Dorado Correctional Facility and was trained in narcotics detection, tracking/trailing, and patrol work.
July 28, 2002: "Kilo," a six year old Belgian Malinois, was put to sleep after suffering from severe heat stroke. "Kilo" had been with handler Jim White and the Derby Police Department since 1997. "Kilo" was trained in narcotics detection, tracking / trailing, and patrol work.
